Concerted actions supporting more girls in IT in the UK

In the UK a number of actions carried out since last year seem to come together to support a break-through in regard to getting more girls to ICT.

MP David Willet, UK Minister for Universities and science clearly woke to the tech gap when he was grilled by the girls at Central Foundation Girls School in London the 15 September 2011.

At Central Foundation Girls School in Bow, east London, 50 students applied for the 20 places available on the "Apps for Good" course that will, for the next five months, look at harnessing the power of Google's Android-based mobile phones to benefit the young people’s community and, indeed, the world.

The minister was at the close of the Tower Hamlets school's Skills Showcase event, hosted by the Tech City UK Investment Organisation (TCIO) where a raft of industry launches was announced to support STEM education. Since November 2010 there has been a rapid rise in the number of new technology companies in the Tech City UK.

MP David Willet clearly relished the challenge and took delight in giving the girls a clear statement that demonstrated that he was up to speed with their concerns.

e-skills UK's industry-driven Girls in IT campaign aims to increase the number of female IT professionals from 17%, to reflect the percentage of women in the UK’s working population: to 45%.

The campaign encourages employers and IT professionals to inspire the next generation of girls into considering a career in IT through:

  1. Signing the e-skills UK 17/45 campaign pledge
  2. Spreading the word through LinkedIn and Twitter by using the hashtag #girlsinit and retweeting relevant posts by @eskillsuk
  3. Supporting students   and
  4. Sharing your success
