Toula is a top graduate of the Civil Engineering Department (BEng, First Class Honours) of City University (London, UK) where she was also awarded the Renie Prize. She obtained her PhD in offshore structures and DIC in Structural Engineering with a scholarship from Imperial College (London, UK).
Toulas research activities focus in the areas of smart management of the built environment, advanced structural analyses, risk and reliability techniques as applied in design, assessment and whole life management optimisation of offshore structures and bridges.
Just hours before the launch of our Newsletter we were informed that Professor Toula Onoufrioru has been appointed the first Vice Rector for Accademic Affairs of Cyprus University of Technology. Congratulations Toula!
Professor Toula Onoufriou gave us the following brief summary about the latest developments in SmartEN:
“Smart Management for Sustainable Human Environment” is an EU FP7 Marie-Curie funded Initial Training Network (ITN) with a consortium which includes research groups from nine organisations with multi-disciplinary complimentary technical expertise distributed across seven European countries and is augmented by six commercial organisations including both large organisations and SMEs spanning in five European countries. The programme also includes nine distinguished scientists from Japan, USA, China, Hong Kong and Australia.
The aim of the ‘SmartEN’ is to fill a research and technology gap and push innovation through the development of an initial research and training network that will focus its activities on the development, effective integration and increased utilisation of emerging technologies in Wireless Sensors, Communications, Non-Destructive Evaluation, and Proactive Management, targeting key issues of current interest to the European Union and internationally in the area of Smart Management of the Human Environment (both built and natural).
The programme supports fourteen Early State Researchers (ESRs) towards a PhD degree, and is planning to recruit five Experienced Researchers (ERs). The research is organised into four Work Programmes on the aforementioned areas which are cut across by four Multi-Disciplinary projects covering Structural Systems, Heritage and Infrastructure, Transportation Infrastructure Systems, and Urban Microclimate.
An important aspect of the ‘SmartEN’ ITN is also training the young ESRs. A number of network events and training activities are undertaken with the involvement of the associate partners, such as organization of multi-disciplinary and researchers’ skills workshops, a two-week Summer School, IPR and entrepreneurship workshop among other. Such activities, as well as secondment opportunities are offered to the ESRs, as to improve their personal skills, to further facilitate the inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary nature of the project, and to provide the ESRs the opportunity to have experience and exposure to industry and end users environment and needs.
