DIFA AWARD 2006

First price went to "Aker Brygge" quarter in Oslo.
Harburg Inner Port in Munich ...
The "Expo Real" at the new "Messe Muenchen" exposition complex is an event that draws large numbers of visitors. At first glance, the theme itself just seems to be too specialised. Far from it: The real-estate business is booming, with no trace of hard times to be seen at any of the booths. 1550 exhibitors from 35 countries are on hand to present themselves. They sent out the word, thus promptly assuring the largest assemblage of people in suits that the republic has seen this week in October.

Channel Hamburg was among the exhibitors, too. The location within Harburg's Inner Port appeared as a part of the Hamburg booth.
And not only there: It was also represented at the DIFA (German Real-Estate Fund) booth. The 14 finalists (of 75 urban neighbourhood districts from 16 European countries) competing for the "DIFA Award" were presented there. The award is regarded as a kind of Oscar on the international scene for commercial and industrial real estate. The awards ceremony was one of the top events at the trade fair.

First Prize went to the "Aker Brygge" quarter in Oslo, Second Prize to the "Neue Mitte" district in Chemnitz, and Third Prize to the "Quartier am Karl-Heine-Kanal" in Leipzig.

The "Schipperskwartier" in Antwerp received a special prize.
Mr  Joern Walter, senior director at Hamburg's Office of Building and Construction, confirmed what had at first been an inofficial bulletin that Channel Hamburg had been awarded fifth place.

vici_200_2006.11.14-10.49.26.jpgThe decisive criterium for the jury's decision (of which Mr Walter was a member) was that the award-winning neighbourhood districts had received better rankings because they were further along in their development. According to Frank Billand, another member of the jury, "In the case of the award winners, the mixture of public and private-sector usage is more well-balanced. The same applies to the degree with which residents actively collaborated on the design." He can easily imagine Channel Hamburg, Harburg Inner Port landing at the very top if it renews its entry as a candidate next time.

On the whole, Expo Real was very satisfying for the delegates from Harburg. "Happily, a great deal of interest was shown in the southern area of the 'Metropolregion Hamburg'," said Mr Jens-Peter Persoon, head of the department for location and land management at Süderelbe AG, a company for growth initiatives. All of the investors situated in the Channel district confirmed his statement. They additionally reported that they were able to establish very promising contacts.

One of the main attractions at the Hamburg booth was a light box offering an impressive visualisation of the Harburger Inner Port complex and its projects.

Many visitors to the trade fair mistakenly held the installation to be a scenic view of the so-called "Hafen-City" site within the Port of Hamburg.
They were quite amazed to learn that the view dealt with its 'little sister', which says a lot about how much more comparative progress Harburger Inner Port has achieved in its development . . . and we did this development also because of and thanks to VISP!
