According to the latest EU survey young people in general and young Swedish women in the County of Sörmland in specific prefer to choose their future workplace in the service sector and the media. The investigation was made among 17.000 young people from all around Europe between the age of 16 and 29.
For many years in the past women's first priority was to work in public services. Today, however, only 4% of the young people prefer the public sector in Sweden, whereas in Europe the interest for this sector still lies around 18%.
The new tendencies look very promising in regard to the growing labor force needs of creative industries, the ICT and media sector as well as Research & Development.
Gender segregation remains still considerable in the traditional branches: 44% of the boys and 13% of the girls answering the questionnaire selected the production- and building sector as their first choice; whereas in child and healthcare 37% of the girls and only 10% of the boys prefer to work.
The study was compiled by the County Administration of Södermanland in co-operation with the international research and consulting company Kairos Future. These facts are part of a larger survey carried out by the company under the heading 'European Youth in a Global Context' - European_Youth_2007.pdf .
