How gender equality contributes to achieving jobs and growth in European regions

Invitation to seminar
Making use of the full potential

12 June 2008 in Brussels
Musical Instruments Museum

Gender equality is one of the fundamental values of the European Union. It is also recognised as a necessary economic condition to achieve more and better jobs, the goals of the Lisbon Agenda. The Lisbon employment targets aim to achieve a 60% employment rate for women by 2010. A recently published progress report from January 2008 states that the employment rate for women has steadily risen from 54.3% in 2000 to 57.2% in 2006.

Much of that success has been achieved by regions in Europe through regional strategies and business development activities. This seminar presents best practice examples from Central Sweden, Oslo Region and South East England that show how the three regions have helped increase the number of women-owned businesses and mainstream gender equality into businesses to help maximise existing potential.

Welcome to the seminar! The keynote speech delivered by Henrik Persson from the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies provides the framework for the seminar and outlines some of the challenges and opportunities how gender equality contributes to achieving jobs and growth in European regions. Finally, the European Commission gives an overview of the work done by DG Regional Policy on gender equality. During the panel debate you will have the opportunity to raise your points with the speakers. The event ends with a lunch.
